SIFUP Initiative Highlights the Importance of Supporting Athletes Beyond Their Playing Careers

A new initiative led by Chile’s football players’ union is highlighting the importance of supporting athletes not only during their careers, but also in building long-term opportunities beyond competition.

Professional athletes often face unique challenges when preparing for life beyond sport. While much attention is placed on performance during active careers, growing efforts across the player movement are emphasising the importance of long-term wellbeing, financial stability, and professional development after retirement from competition.

This week, Chile’s football players’ union, SIFUP, announced the recipients of its “Bono Pyme” initiative - a programme designed to support current and former footballers in developing their own businesses and entrepreneurial projects.

The initiative will provide financial support to five footballers seeking to strengthen personal ventures outside of football, reinforcing the importance of helping athletes create sustainable opportunities beyond their playing careers.

Beyond the direct financial assistance, the programme reflects a broader principle increasingly present across player associations worldwide: athletes supporting one another not only on the field, but throughout every stage of their professional and personal lives.

Career transition remains one of the most important - and often most difficult - periods in an athlete’s journey. For many players, retirement from professional sport can bring uncertainty around income, identity, education, and future employment opportunities.

As a result, player unions and athlete organisations are increasingly expanding their work beyond collective bargaining and workplace protections to include education programmes, career development initiatives, mental health support, and entrepreneurship opportunities.
