African Leagues and FIFPRO Africa agreement marks milestone for social dialogue in the region

A landmark agreement between African Leagues and FIFPRO Africa establishes a formal framework for dialogue between players and leagues, strengthening governance, labour relations and the future of professional football on the continent.

African professional football has taken a significant step forward following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between African Leagues and FIFPRO Africa, creating a formal structure for ongoing social dialogue at continental level. Signed in Cairo in March 2026, the agreement brings together leagues and player representatives in a continuous and institutionalised framework for engagement.

The MoU establishes a platform for cooperation between employers and players, focusing on key areas such as contract standards, dispute resolution, capacity building and the development of collective bargaining structures. Celebrated by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the agreement aligns the governance of football in Africa with international labour standards and strengthens the foundations for a more stable and sustainable professional game.

Beyond its immediate scope, the agreement represents a structural shift in how football is governed. For the first time, leagues and players across the continent are engaging through a formalised process that recognises their shared role in shaping the future of the sport — moving away from fragmented or informal interactions towards a more coordinated and accountable model.

For World Players, this development reinforces a core principle: professional athletes are workers, and meaningful progress in sport depends on recognising their rights and role within formal labour frameworks. Structured social dialogue is essential to building fairer systems, strengthening governance and ensuring that the growth of the game is aligned with the protection and wellbeing of players.

The African Leagues–FIFPRO Africa agreement is therefore not only a milestone for the continent, but also an important reference point for global sport. It demonstrates that when dialogue between players and leagues is institutionalised, the result is a more credible, resilient and sustainable sporting ecosystem.
